scope and content | This collection is primarily comprised of the records of Henry Wakabayashi and his father, Jisaburo Wakabayashi. It contains numerous photographs dated 1928-1984; two medals, a Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal and Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, both awarded to Mr. Henry Hiroshi Wakabayashi, O.B.C, along with a certificate.
Also contains the former contents of a black binder filled with primary documents relating to Jisaburo Wakabayashi as a representative of the Rosebery camp to the Spanish Consulate during the Second World War, as well as his immigration certificates, bank statements, tax documents, correspondence, and more. In addition, there are some documents referring to Henry Wakabayashi and his accomplishments as president of Pacific Liaicon, Inc; as well as materials related to Henry's involvement as a member of the Vancouver JCCA Redress Committee. Contains committee meeting minutes and agendas, handwritten meeting notes, list of members of the committee, press releases and reports, terms of reference, updates, pamphlets, magazine articles, and correspondence.
Collection also contains some internment-era records of the Miyagawa family, including 6 photo prints and some textual records. There are also some pages from an accounting ledger for Chapman Brothers Produce, 139 Water St. Vancouver which contain the accounts of numerous Japanese Canadians. |
biography | Henry Wakabayashi is the founder of Pacific Liaicon Ltd., he has helped many major projects such as the Vancouver Sky Train, the expansion of the Vancouver International Airport and the Metro Vancouver drinking water treatment program. In the late 2000s, he has been involved with the expansion of the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, and has provided senior advisory services to the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He has been active within British Columbia’s Nikkei community through his involvement in the Momiji Garden project and the National Nikkei Heritage Centre. Wakabayashi received the Order of British Columbia in 2000, and the Order of Canada in 2009. (Adapted biography from the Bulletin, December 15, 2009, by John Endo Greenaway)
Henry's Father, Jisaburo, was representative of Japanese Nationals at Rosebery, B.C. who regularly submitted reports to the Spanish Consul in Vancouver and Montreal. Under the Geneva Conventions of 1929, Spain acted as the Protecting Power, monitoring the conditions of the Japanese Nationals in Canada.
