scope and content | The collection consists of three series. The first is of artwork created by Shizuye Takashima produced from 1954-1991. The second series consists of three books written or illustrated by Shizuye Takashima; A Child in Prison Camp (Japanese and English versions) and Kenji and the Cricket. And the third series consists of one sound recording of an interview of Shizuye Takashima that took place in October, 2003. |
biography | Shizuye Takashima was born in British Columbia in 1930. At age eleven Shizuye was sent with her family to the Japanese Canadian internment camp of New Denver in British Columbia’s interior. Following the war Shizuye studied art at the Ontario College of Fine Arts. After graduation she painted and worked as an instructor at her alma mater. Her experience in internment camps was the subject of an award-winning autobiographical book A Child in Prison Camp. |
