biography

The Nakashima family, composed of Hideo (Harry) (1889-1954), Matsuno (1897-1933) and Robert Nakashima, (1921-present) and Doris (Kaz) Nakashima nee Kojima, lived outside of the one hundred kilometre Japanese Canadian exclusion zone before the beginning of the Second World War and, as a result, their property was not affected by the War Measures Act and they were not interned. When Hideo and Matsuno first moved to Canada, they lived in British Columbia and some early photographs are of Hideo and Matsuno in BC. They eventually moved to Moose Jaw Saskatchewan at an unknown date before the war. Around 1943, they moved to the current home of Robert and Doris Nakashima in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan who were still residing there as of 2005.

Hideo and his family were wealthier than many other Japanese Canadians outside of British Columbia and Hideo operated his own dental clinic. Due to the fact that they avoided internment, they possessed many antiques and items that were unavailable to most Japanese Canadians such as war rations coupons, photographs of themselves during the war and other Japanese Canadians in BC before the war.

Hideo is also photographed shaking hands with Crown Prince (now Emperor) Akihito in 1953 during his first official visit to Canada after the Second World War.

Doris (Kaz) Nakashima nee Kojima grew up in the Fanny Bay/Royston area of Vancouver Island in BC prior to internment and some of the photographs given to Kaz by her parents show pictures of her at school on Vancouver Island in BC and in internment camps in Tashme, BC and Minto, BC.
