scope and content | The collection consists of two series. The first series is items belonging to Charles Leonard Cowdrill and the second series is items belonging to his daughter Jo Anne Dawe (nee Cowdrill). |
biography | Charles Leonard Cowdrill went to Greenwood, BC in 1942 as a BCSC Commissioner. His daughter Jo Anne, who was stationed there with her father, grew up in Greenwood becoming friends with many of the Japanese Canadians.
(Chuck Tasaka remembers Mr Cowdrill as being really good to the Japanese Canadians in Greenwood. Mr Cowdrill also owned a second-hand store. Mr Tasaka remembers his father calling Mr Cowdrill "Shi-ga-san" or Mr Cigar.
Mr Cowdrill brought old furniture and other items from the coast because he knew Japanese families needed extra beds, furniture and house furnishings. Chuck remembers going there as a boy to buy old Boer War jungle hats and canvas army pouches for fishing.) |
