biography | Hideo Takahashi (b.1900 in Sendai, Miyagi-ken) came to Victoria, Canada in 1918 with his father (Katsusaburo) and 2 brothers (Mitsuo and Masao). They worked in logging, fishing, general labour, and dry cleaning. Hideo taught judo and kendo in his spare time. He returned to Japan in 1927 to marry Tomi Watanabe (b.1907) and returned to Victoria and Vancouver where 6 children (Hidekazu AKA Willie, Kenji, Kazuko AKA Kaz (b. 1931), Yoko, Azusa, and Noboru) were born.
In March 1942 the Takahashi family was forcibly removed from Victoria to Hastings Park and remained there for six months. They were then moved to Tashme camp, 14 miles from Hope. One year later Hideo passed away.
In 1945 the family was moved to Rosebery and then to New Denver. In 1950 the Takahashi family moved to Hope. Kazuko and Yoko moved to Vancouver. Willie went to Sechelt. Azusa and Noboru moved to Toronto.
