biography | The collection was donated by Elsie Toguri whose mother was Midori Iwasaki nee Yamazaki, Yasushi Yamazaki's niece. A story passed down from Elsie reveals that Yamazaki had called a nephew out from Japan to help him run the newspaper, but the nephew refused to relocate. Elsie's mother, Midori left her position as an x-ray technician in Japan and took over the newspaper. Midori later converted to Catholicism and worked with nuns to establish a daycare for Japanese immigrant mothers so that they wouldn't have to carry their children on their backs to work. Midori helped women leave abusive husbands and helped many immigrants settle in Vancouver.
