scope and content

The file consists of 6 documents. The file contains the results of separate searches for Japanese immigration records from Hiroshima prefecture, Japan. The searches are dated between September 12 and 15 of 1992. The sources of the data include the Canada Department of Labour, "Immigration Records 1908-1920, Returning Immigrants from Japan" and "New Immigrants from Japan" ; "Nakayama, Jinshiro 1921. Kanada no Hoko. Tokyo : Nakayama" [Treasures of Canada by Nakayama Jinshiro] ; "Tairiku Nippo's 1941 Kanada Zairyu Hojin Jinmei" [Japanese Residents in Canada]; "Tairiku Nippo's 1909. Kanada Doho Hatten taikan. Vol I. Vancouver : Tainiku Mipposha" [Encyclopedia of the Japanese in Canada]" ; and "Japan, Gaimusho" [Ministry of Foreign Affairs Records].

The database that housed these sources was created by Audrey Kobayashi at McGill University with the financial support of the National Association of Japanese Canadians. Audrey Kobayashi printed out the names of all Hiroshima immigrants to Canada that were in these listings at Midge Ayukawa's request in September 1992. These lists were used to locate the participants of Midge Ayukawa's study, published as "Hiroshima Immigrants in Canada 1891-1941" by UBC Press in 2008.
